Chassis:
Sold through the Coombs Group, this D-Type was acquired by its first owner in 1957. He opted not to race the car but instead had the car converted for road use with several XKSS derived modifications. Among the changes the addition of a full-width windscreen and a passenger door. Among the subsequent owners was James Dawnay, who also raced an Aston Martin DBR1, and Australian Formula 1 driver Paul Hawkins. During the 1970s, it was meticulously converted back to its original D-Type specification. The original engine was subsequently removed, to ensure its preservation, and replaced with a correct specification straight-six engine. In 1994, it joined longterm Swiss ownership. A decade later, the engine was extensively rebuilt by Sportgarage Ruch and was later re-installed during the a subsequent service by Swiss specialist Graber Sportgarage. After more than three decades in the same hands, the un-raced chassis XKD 551 was consigned to headline the inaugural Broad Arrow Auctions Zurich sale.
