Chassis: 04R
Chassis 04R was acquired new by Lindsay Owen-Jones, who was the CEO of L’Oreal and one of the driving forces behind the F1 GTR program. The car was run for him and Pierre-Henri Raphanel in Gulf colours by the GTC Motorsport team in the BPR Championship. The best result was a seventh at Paul Ricard before the car was flipped on its roof by Owen-Jones during round four of the championship at Jarama. The damage was extensive enough for the car to be returned to McLaren and Owen-Jones acquired another F1 GTR to complete the season. Once rebuilt, chassis 04R was dispatched in 1996 to Japan where it served as a spare for the factory-backed Team Lark All Japan GT Championship effort. It was finally pressed in service for the final round of the championship when one of the team’s 1996-specification F1 GTRs was damaged. Resplendent in the striking Team Lark colours, it was raced by John Nielsen and David Brabham to a fourth overall at Sugo. This sufficed for the Danish / Australian pairing to secure the championship. Still wearing the instantly recognisable pink and grey Team Lark livery, chassis 04R has more recently joined a prominent French private collection that includes several more examples of McLaren F1 road and racing cars.
